Introduction

The landscape of small businesses on Nigerian campuses is rapidly evolving, with students increasingly venturing into both service-based and product-based enterprises. However, managing these businesses alongside academic responsibilities can be a daunting task and given the very harsh economic climate in Nigeria, the stakes are higher for these fledging businesses, you either innovate or your business dies. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful, albeit, not so reliable ally, offering innovative tools and solutions that can streamline operations, boost productivity, and help students find a balance between their academic pursuits and entrepreneurial ambitions.

In this article, I will explore the ways AI can assist student entrepreneurs on Nigerian campuses, with a specific focus on product-based and service-based businesses. To be as practical as possible, I will discuss how AI is helping me build my fitness business and ways I plan to leverage AI as I build. As a side note, I will briefly highlight how AI can be used to help students balance their academic and business commitments.

AI Tools for Product-Based Student Businesses

Product-based businesses typically require a significant investment in inventory, marketing, delivery and customer support. AI can be used to automate many of these tasks, freeing up students’ time and resources to focus on other aspects of their business. Not all of the tools to be discussed are AI tools. Some of them, such as Google Trends and SimilarWeb, are simply data analytics tools. However, all of the tools I mentioned can be used to automate tasks and make decisions, which are some of the key benefits of AI and some can also be integrated with AI tools.

Here are some specific AI tools that can be helpful for product-based student businesses:

  1. Inventory management and local delivery management: AI-driven inventory management systems can predict demand, optimize stock levels, and automate reordering processes. This can help students avoid stockouts and overstocking, which can save them time, room space and money.

Case Study: U-Fit — My Journey Leveraging AI for My Fitness Business

1. Logo Design with AI:

  • My Creative Vision: When I embarked on the journey to establish U-Fit, I was inspired by the potential of AI in logo design. I explored AI-driven platforms like Looka.com, where I was able to curate a logo suite that perfectly embodies U-Fit’s identity and mission. I spent weeks testing different ideas, colour palettes, and iterations. I finally arrived at a colour palette suggested by Huemint.com. I finalized the logo designs in Figma. This personalized touch ensures that our brand resonates with our target audience.
  • Creating Brand Guidelines: With our logo suite in place, I took the initiative to create comprehensive brand design guidelines in Figma. These guidelines include typography, colour coordination, and the creation of icons. I made them into reusable assets in two complimentary colours. These guidelines serve as a compass, ensuring consistency across all our marketing materials and communication channels, reinforcing our brand identity.

2. Market Research:

  • Crafting a Customer-Centric Survey: As the owner of U-Fit, I recognized the importance of understanding our potential customers deeply. With the assistance of ChatGPT, I crafted a customer-centric survey that aims to gather invaluable insights. This survey is a crucial step in shaping our offerings, meeting each individual customer’s point of need and helpful to craft our social media marketing strategies.

3. Business Planning:

  • My Strategic Roadmap: Developing a robust business plan was a pivotal moment in this journey. With ChatGPT’s guidance, I was able to structure the plan effectively, filling it with my personal expertise and vision for U-Fit. This business plan serves as my strategic roadmap, guiding U-Fit’s growth and development.

4. Social Media Management and Content Creation:

  • Future-Ready Social Media Strategy: Looking ahead, I am considering the integration of AI-driven social media management tools like Buffer. These tools will automate content scheduling, audience engagement, and performance tracking, ensuring that U-Fit maintains a strong online presence.
  • AI-Generated Social Media Content (Upcoming): In an effort to optimize our social media efforts, I am planning to utilize AI-generated text with in-person moderation and review for our posts. The graphics will be handled by me because I already design. This innovative approach will not only save time but also maintain the high-quality content that our audience expects from us.

5. Customer Engagement and Retention:

  • AI-Powered Chatbots (Upcoming): To enhance customer engagement and support, I am working on the implementation of AI-powered chatbots on our social media channels. These chatbots will provide quick responses to common inquiries, ensuring a seamless user experience.

6. Personalized Workout Plans (Future Implementation):

  • Catering to Individual Goals: As part of our future offerings, I am excited about the prospect of providing personalized workout plans generated by AI algorithms with very strict human review. These tailored plans will cater to our clients’ unique fitness goals, levels, diets and taking into consideration their daily activities, reinforcing our commitment to their success.

I am excited to see how AI can help U-Fit grow and succeed in the future. I am confident that by leveraging AI in these ways, we can provide our customers with an exceptional experience and help them reach their fitness goals.

Balancing Academics and Business with AI

In addition to the AI tools that can be used to improve the efficiency of student businesses, AI can also be used to help students balance their academic and business commitments.

Here are some specific ways that AI can be used for this purpose:

  • Time management: AI-powered time management tools can help students organize their tasks, set priorities, and allocate time efficiently to both academics and business activities.
  • Personalized study plans: AI-driven edtech platforms can offer personalized study plans based on students’ learning styles and goals. This can help students optimize their study time and improve their academic performance. From my own experience there is not a lot of accessible tools yet for specialized or technical courses bit with time, I believe these will become a reality
  • Predictive analytics: AI can analyze academic performance data and provide insights to help students identify areas that need improvement. This information can be used to develop targeted study plans and improve academic outcomes.

Conclusion

AI is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance productivity and work-life balance for Nigerian students who run small businesses on campus. By choosing the right AI tools and integrating them seamlessly into their entrepreneurial and academic journeys, Nigerian students can thrive as both entrepreneurs and scholars, striking a harmonious balance between their academic pursuits and small business ventures
